Listen to him on record and you’ll be mesmerized, put under a bewitching, jazzy spell. See him live in the club and you’ll understand why this man is an internationally renowned DJ.
DJ Krush is one of the founders of Japanese hip-hop. But that’s not what makes him important. Krush is a true artist, a turntablist, who pulses with creative energy and pushes for constant innovation. Not to mention he’s highly respected by fans, artists, DJs, and musicians around the world.
The man has got a mind–he doesn’t strive for any particular purpose other than self-satisfaction. And he sets the bar for himself… immeasurably high.
How can this town possibly afford to give away anymore free music?
On Wednesday, January 27th, Holocene introduces their first edition of Carpet Culture where you can "get warm n fuzzy in the front lounge room with some of Portland's greatest up-and-coming musical talents."
This week features electro-rock with Wampire, dark soundscapes from Tunnels, and some cozy and curly ambient like the fur of Golden Retriever Moody. Plus Wampire shows up again on the big screen in the premiere episode of Into the Woods, a new web series where Portland bands march out to a cabin in the wilderness of Mt. Hood to perform an intimate concert with their besties.
Check the trailer out here but show your face at Holocene at 8:30 PM for the real deal, for free!!! 21+
On Sunday night, Phoenix were bigger than any Louis or archduchess. They were the rightful Kings of Versailles, sovereign rulers of the Crystal Ballroom.
A blissful evening full of bubbly, bouncing tunes kicked in immediately with the head-bobbing, shoulder-shimmying cracks of “Lisztomania.” Phoenix are one of those bands that sound just as clean and pristine live as they do in a recording studio. The crowd was instantaneously thunderous and robust singalongs were belted out with every other song as the claps climbed up to the chandeliered ceiling.
White strobes like flash bulbs blinded the audience as extra percussion boosted “Lasso” and “Girlfriend” with the drums kicking so potently, the songs ended like they were just beginning.

Brian Mumford, or Dragging an Ox through Water, builds electronics and makes them do his musical bidding. Often the music created is eclectically experimental, yet simply folky. At times it’s symphonic, and sometimes it’s just dirty, fuzzy, distorted.
Dragging an Ox is a creator of layered narratives, lately leaning towards “topical songwriting,” a traditional element of folk music. He magnificently blends his style of free associative story-telling and crooning with his subtle, distinct electronica, which can whine and screech splitting ears but also soothe and calm melodiously.
Dragging an Ox combines elements that don’t belong together yet fit like a puzzle… of a Jackson Pollock canvas. Everything has its own place and it somehow fits so naturally, or unnaturally, but feels just right.
If you don’t know The Yummy Fur, you know a plethora of bands who they’ve influenced. You’ve been listening to this 1990s Glasgow group for the last decade, only reincarnated as Franz Ferdinand or through the bass lines and dance rock that drives indie acts like Interpol and Gossip.
So four boys from Scotland made their first trip to the United States as The Yummy Fur, over 10 years after the band last played together in 1999, to play five dates and ultimately bow out (probably forever) at Mississippi Studios in Portland.
Last night Pyramiddd (formerly Starfucker) tweeted that they will host a benefit for Haiti with Deelay Ceelay, Gulls, and DJ New Moon Poncho at Holocene this Sunday, January 24th.
Haiti's national national motto is: "L'union fait la force" or "with unity comes strength." In honor of this mindset, PDX's best electro-dance acts will donate all of the show proceeds to Mercy Corps for relief efforts in Haiti. Support Haiti by supporting local music. $10, 8 PM, 21+.
19 Tuesday Austin's Toast brings jam-band funk alongside metal from PDX's Wuzzard and experimental from Guyve at the Ash Street Saloon, 9:15 PM. 21 and over.

Reinventing your sound is exciting, scary, adventurous, and a sign of a spectacular artist... that is as long as it works. And yes, it did for Miss Stephanie Schneiderman.
Artists that evolve, break their personal mold and creative boundaries, that explore--those are the elite musicians. Reinventing your sound is "risky business," according to Stephanie Schneiderman, but the risk factor is decimated when you have producer, beat-extraordinaire Keith Schreiner (Auditory Sculpture) on your team.
And Stephanie's kept her songwriting and voice, which smoothly float over Keith's soothing trip-hop ambiance. It's sexy. It's relaxed. It's lovely.
The two bring their down-tempo, electro-beats and sensual vocal bliss along with James Beaton (Storm and the Balls) on keys to Jimmy Mak's on Saturday, January 23rd with Come Gather Around Us at 8 PM for $10.
And this girl is setting up and knocking down cocktail hours at Jimmy Mak's every first and third Thursdays starting in February through April. These shows will feature the keyboardist/singer Jade Vanacore, and Stephanie says, "I've been working on a more stripped down version of the trip-hop show involving beats, loops, keys, electric guitar and harmonies so this residency will give me a chance to get really comfortable with all my new toys. Also, I'm going to try out a bunch of new songs!"
